The Taipei City Department of Labor held the 2025 Taipei International Labor Film Festival Opening Tea Reception on 7th October, where Deputy Commissioner Ming-Chih Chiang, festival ambassador Peggy Tseng and Labor Film Awards jury members Yi-Wen Cheng and Yi-Shan Lee announced the official film selection and unveiled the nominees of the 19th Labor Film Awards. This year’s festival theme, “Behind the Lens Lies a Desire for Equality,” explores gender justice, institutional challenges and professional spirit across global workplaces. Festival ambassador Peggy Tseng, the festival’s first female ambassador, emphasized her perspective: “These works made me realize that although we come from different countries and industries, the efforts of workers to survive, speak up and be respected in the workplace are strikingly similar.” She further encouraged the public not to miss this festival for free tickets, running October 25–31 ateslite Art House, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.
Commissioner Wang Chiu-Tung stated that since its inception, the festival has sought to make the struggles of workers visible through film. As the only festival in Taiwan focusing exclusively on labor issues, it has run uninterrupted for 19 years and is closely tied to the Labor Film Awards, which gather submissions centered on labor themes. This year’s selected films highlight imbalanced power relations in the workplace, addressing workplace bullying, gender-based violence, overwork among medical staff, the struggles of workers with disabilities, and the challenges brought by new technologies. These works confront institutional gaps head-on and remind society that every form of labor deserves respect and understanding.
The festival will present a total of 16 films, including 8 feature selections across drama, documentary, and social realism. Key works include Late Shift, which portrays the emotional toll on healthcare workers, and After Work, which examines the disruptive role of artificial intelligence. The Way We Talk explores the identity struggles of the hearing impaired, while No No Thought documents the journey of Taiwan’s U-Theatre.
International selections bring additional perspectives. Miyazaki, Spirit of Nature highlights the craftsmanship of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, while Hong Kong’s The Last Dance reflects on labor, family, and tradition through the funeral industry. Being Maria exposes the systemic oppression faced by actresses, and Black Box Diaries presents journalist Shiori Ito’s personal account of sexual assault and institutional silence in Japan.
The Labor Film Awards Competition features eight nominees: Midnight Screening, Never Gone, The Script of a Taxi Driver, When the Plane Passes By, New Spring Farm, Happy Together – Surviving at Work, Welcome to Taipei Main Station Hall, and The Story of Rimuy. These works span both narrative and documentary forms, exploring institutional structures, cultural inheritance, identity and life choices.
The jury commended the nominees for not only depicting workers’ struggles but also incorporating emotional depth, humor and unique storytelling that invite broader reflection on labor issues. The Grand Prize of NT$350,000 will be announced at the Labor Film Awards Ceremony on October 25, the highlight of this year’s festival.
