Film director and writer, Ambassador for the 2026 Taipei International Labor Film Festival.
Hou Chi-jan’s work is characterized by a distinctive, poetic visual style deeply rooted in collective memory, local culture, and humanistic concern. His films frequently explore the intricacies of urban memory, cultural spaces, and the diverse lives of ordinary people. Through his lens, Hou illuminates the evolving circumstances of those in the arts and cultural industries—including independent bookstore owners, cultural practitioners, and atypical workers—revealing the often unseen time, emotions, and perseverance behind cultural labor.
In 2003, his first work, Stardust 15749001, won the Grand Prize at the Taipei Film Festival. His 2012 feature, When a Wolf Falls in Love with a Sheep, was selected as the opening film for the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, subsequently winning the Best Technical Achievement Award at the Taipei Film Awards and the Best Director Award at the Fantasia International Film Festival.
Beginning in 2014, Hou initiated Poetries from the Bookstores—a documentary series capturing the stories of forty independent bookstores across Taiwan. As the series progressed into its second and third seasons, it offered a profound glimpse into Taiwan’s cultural landscape through the life philosophies of bookstore owners. The series examines independent bookstores as sites of cultural labor, navigating the challenges of shifting reading habits and market pressures to carve out their own presence within local communities. Poetries from the Bookstores was awarded the Jury Grand Prize for Documentary at the Guam International Film Festival. His latest work in the series, Poetries from the Bookstores: Somewhere I Belong, was officially selected for the 2026 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), where it held its European premiere.
